Dear Dr. Jen, What should my goal HDL or “good” cholesterol be?

Answer: The higher, the better! For men, the HDL cholesterol should be 40 or higher.

For women, the HDL cholesterol should be 50 or higher.

HDL cholesterol helps remove bad cholesterol, so healthy amounts of HDL cholesterol is good for the heart.

On the other hand, having a lower than optimal amount of HDL cholesterol is considered a RISK factor for heart disease.

Stay tuned for ways to improve your HDL “good” cholesterol!
