Will Medicare cover lung cancer screening?

By jmaroneyct@gmail.com • April 25, 2018 • Comments Off on Will Medicare cover lung cancer screening?

Dear Dr. Jen, I am a former smoker. Will Medicare cover lung cancer screening?

Answer: Medicare Part B covers a lung cancer screening with Low Dose Cat Scan once per year.

Criteria include:
You are age 55-77.

You don’t have signs or symptoms of lung cancer.

You are either a current smoker or have quit smoking within the last 15 years.
You have a tobacco smoking history of at least 30 “pack years” (an average of one pack a day for 30 years).
You get a written order from your doctor.

Please contact your doctor to discuss this testing, if you fit the above criteria.

And, for those who still smoke, please contact your doctor to learn about available medications and other resources to help you quit smoking!!
